Can I Get Up Now?!

Can I Get Up Now?!

The title of this post is directly inspired by a Kirk Franklin song featuring Toby Mac.

It’s a Christian song with a message that we should rely on God through EVERY season of our lives.  In it, the artists are recounting how beat up they feel by life and their then current circumstances each ending their verses with the question to God…”Can I Get Up Now?!”  (sometimes even yelling it)

This song has been out for a few years now and I remember one time coming home and listening to it and yelling with Toby Mac…..”Can I Get Up Now?!”  It was a serious question for me….”like…seriously Lord, I think I’ve had enough…learned my lesson…been through enough! Can it just turn around for me?…..CAN I GET UP NOW?!?!?!” were my thoughts in the moments.

My scream alone in the car was guttural….it had come from a place of deep weariness.  I was living in a world where I was a good person.  I was intentionally sweet and overly nice to people.  I had a really good job.  I had an excellent education.  I had a nice family in a good neighborhood.  I had “done everything right,” if you will.  But still….life was kickin my ass!

It hurt…it sucked…it wasn’t fair!  I was tired….CAN I GET UP NOW?!?!?!

I wanted to “get up” to the fairy tale potential of life that I believed was available based on my upbringing.  If you just do this and this and this….then you’ll have that!

Yea? …. Well I’d done all of that and life was still hard and I didn’t understand.  I think this is the same point where many people begin to give up on their ‘dreams.’  If you have done everything that you know to do, AND you’re subconsciously living in a world of false expectations, you’re doomed for a painful letdown.  Unfortunately, for some, it is also spirit killing…. CAN I GET UP NOW?!?!?!

Know why….because YOU decide WHEN YOU get up!

So many of us leave our lives to chance! We leave the outcome of our lives to the off chance that circumstances will align up perfectly for us at some point in time which will allow us to plant OUR proverbial flags on the “success” mountain of life.

You can get up now because we don’t live in a world where we have to ask for permission to live the life that we want!  We don’t have to ask God, or anyone else for permission to make our lives the best.  He already took care of that thru Jesus.  Every external hindrance we would encounter has been removed.   It’s the internal barriers of our minds that we should be yelling to!

You don’t have to get up now because you were never down….you just have not walked (achieved some level of success)!!  And, if you can relate to the recurring question of this post at all and you have “walked,” maybe you haven’t walked in all the greatness that is inside of you.

Either way….the only thing required of you to guarantee your opportunity to plant your “flag” on “success” mountain is sacrifice!

Most of us never GET UP because we don’t want to GIVE UP the false reality of our present comforts!

That was true for me at the time that I was yelling in the car alongside Toby Mac! I didn’t want to face the truth of life….that I didn’t need permission to get up I need to own personal responsibility for getting up!

Now…there is definitely a time to be still and listen for direction, but that’s AFTER you’ve done all you can!

The Disappointment of Personal Expectations

The Disappointment of Personal Expectations

I think it’s absolutely amazing how much we expect of each other as human beings.

I’m actually quite fascinated with myself when it comes to this.  I’m a very cerebral person and I’m constantly observing people, places and things and sort of “positioning” myself for things that I anticipate might happen.

But….you know what I’ve learned???….I think too much! LBVS!! …Especially about all this “positioning” stuff.  Thanks to an awesome woman that I recently got to spend a weekend with, I saw that this was really a “mask” (aka defense mechanism) that I used to keep people at bay.

We get to know a person in a marvelous area of their lives…it’s typical of introductions in positive settings.  However, with continued exposure to them, we most assuredly see them in a different and less fruitful area in their lives.  Often times, we lose site of the humanity of almost every person that we connect with….Benefit of the doubt, understanding and compassion fly out the window in exchange for our own mental safety net.

In the words of Mrs. Julie Holloway …  **le sigh**

There are many times when I find myself marveling at an incredible message that I’ve received from someone…then later find myself questioning the truth of the message once I learn something unflattering about the messenger.  So many flaws with this, but I’ll only highlight two for this message.  These are the two that I’m consciously training myself against at the present moment:

1.  Who the hell do I think I am?!  Everyone has flaws…everyone! It is not my place to stand in judgment of anyone.  When I think about it… It is very burdensome on me to sit around and think about someone else and where they can improve!  It is a constant reminder to myself of the areas that I need to improve in.  If I stay focused on myself, there’s no way I have time to think about other people.  #REALITY CHECK TO ME!  :D  … and yes, I “check” myself all the time! LOL!!  (Consider it, a necessity for balance).

2. Just because a person has a flaw in an area that they teach on, doesn’t mean that their teaching is irrelevant!  If you’re sitting in front of a person, and they give you insight and fruit and knowledge that help you go to the next level…even if they haven’t gotten their themselves, take it for what it is for you and move on!

The reality is that you can learn something from a tree if you wanted to…it really just depends on the openness and your ability to be receptive.  You want to look for lessons on things to duplicate and things not to duplicate.

Opportunities for growth are all around….even if from “imperfect messengers.”

The Magnificence of Excellence

The Magnificence of Excellence

As students of continual growth, it’s important that we have many different sources that we draw our inspirations and ideas from.  With that in mind, from time to time we will be sharing some of the posts from resources that we get our ways of thinking from.  Today, we will be featuring a blog post written by one of the Founders and the current Chief Cultural Officer of Chiro One Wellness Centers, Mr. Brett Penager.

This post struck me because it cuts to the core of subconscious recognition that we hope to unearth within our readers through our posts.  We hope it imparts to and inspires you as much as it did us!!

The Magnificence of Excellence

By Brett Penager

“Stop…thinking about where you have to be, what you have to do, who you have to meet, follow up, or get together with and all of the things and stuff that can swallow up our time here on earth and make us absolutely numb to the magnificence of excellence that exist all around us every single day.

I’d like to invite you to take a brief respite from the urgency of living and linger with me for a moment in deep thought and gratitude. Let’s stop just ‘living’ and feel again what it is to be ‘ALIVE’…

Most of us were born with the unfathomable gifts of touch, taste, sight, hearing, smell and ability to think. Many of us can also be guilty of going so fast that we don’t stop and take the time to really get how incredibly special our world is around us and appreciate the beauty of those who’ve mastered their gifts and in so doing allow us the privilege of experiencing their magnificence of excellence. Deep within all of us is an insatiable desire to fulfill our innermost spiritual callings. That unexplainable vision that lies within our souls like a child wanting to be loved, played with, adored and cherished. When we honor this truth and embark on our individual journeys of self-discovery and mastery, this same gift blesses humanity with the ultimate expression of being…love.

With your ears, listen anew to the majestic aural beauty in the voices of Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Luciano Pavarotti, Marian Anderson, Celine Dion and others; or the musicianship and brilliance of Mozart, Beethoven, Louis Armstrong, Elvis, The Beetles, Bob Dylan, Prince and the late Michael Jackson whom have all have risen to the pinnacle of their craft. In the expression of their gifts lies the magnificence of excellence for us all.

With your eyes, behold anew at the imagination of the minds eye as illustrated and sculpted for the world to view in the artistry of Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Monet, Picasso, and Salvador Dali to name a few. Or the impossible brought to manifestation in engineering as evidenced by the Great Pyramids of Egypt, Colosseum, Great Wall of China, Stonehenge, Taj Mahal, and in modern times, the GoldenGate Bridge, Burj Dubai, Burj Al-Arab Hotel, Birds Nest Stadium in Beijing China and space travel. In each, marvel at the magnificence of excellence that all started with a singular thought and vision then brought to fruition.

With your tongue, become present anew with the unparalleled ability for us to clearly distinguish an infinite amount of savory and delectable combinations of flavors and those blessed with the gift of combining them for our pleasure. Whether you have an affinity for sweet, sour, salty, bitter, spicy, or umami; there are those who have studied and revered their gifts to literally serve the world. Whether it be your mother’s home cooking or a feast prepared by some of the worlds best known chefs, we are all blessed with the product of them following their calling and gracing us with their magnificence of excellence.

With your touch, feel anew the textures of our incredible world and marvel at our ability to differentiate them all. Those who chase their dreams and abilities in this area bless us with clothes to adorn our bodies, homes to fulfill and protect our families and materials to both stimulate and comfort us, as we so desire.

Still yourself for a moment and listen…listen to that voice within that begs for your attention. The voice that says, “you and only you were magnificently made to bless the world through your ability, talent and God given gifts to do this one thing.”

Some will listen and lack the belief that they can, some will listen and fearfully decline, and a very few will listen, take action, and change the world. It is not an easy choice; it is full of arduous work, time, and discipline. Yet it is the greatest gift that you can give to yourself and the world in which we live…the magnificence of excellence. Let it be you. Believe…”

Be True, Be You

Be True, Be You

I was sitting on the plane on my way to the Bahamas when this topic came to mind.

Its importance struck me as I was reading a book called “The Four Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive” by Patrick Lencioni.

In summary, one of the lead characters of this book nearly destroyed a company because of his insecurities.  He covertly lashed out at his colleagues and reeked internal havoc in a company all because he was insecure in whom he was.

He was used to operating in environments where being a chameleon of sorts was necessary for his survival and or success in the corporate environment.  However, his new environment required authenticity in himself.  What a novel concept?!  **sarcasm should be noted here**  icon biggrin Be True, Be You

Authenticity …. Something the character in this book had never actually cultivated in his self because he was too busy trying to be who everyone else thought he should be! … If this sounds oddly familiar to you, great! I’m on the right track! icon wink Be True, Be You

Essentially, at the end of the day, we were all born with an internal compass!  One that we’ve been trained to ignore for the entirety of our lives because from birth we were groomed to seek personal validation from the approval of others.

TODAY (whatever day you’re reading this) is YOUR day to stop and examine the authenticity of who you are and how you act relative to your internal compass….relative to whom you were created to be!

If you find yourself in a situation or situations where you are consistently being an inauthentic version of yourself….if you don’t even have a clue as to what your authenticity feels like anymore, today is YOUR day to start soul searching!!

We are born knowing who we are…but sometimes, we just get lost along the way!

A Little Heart Exercise…

A Little Heart Exercise…

Soooo….I’ve been out of the country for a few days so forgive me for the posting gap!

But I love those get aways because it gives me time to kind of calm down and assess the moments around me.  Reflection points if you will.

During this particular reflection point, I came up with a little exercise that I hope will be freeing (or least give some direction) to you!

I’ve been doing some research lately just to clarify life!  I’ve found that many people actually lose control of their lives because by the time they actually figure out what areas they should be managing, it’s more than half over.

What I’m going to do in this post is lay out the areas of life, according to John Demartini, that we should be looking to manage and then ask you some straight forward and hopefully action provoking questions to get you at least moving toward your goal!

Here goes nothin….

Seven areas of your life:  1. Mental/learning/personal development 2. Vocational/career/business  3. Financial 4. Family 5. Social 6. Physical 7. Spiritual

Do this for every area in your private time, but for today pick one of the areas above and answer the following:

  1. Name the area in your life where you are not where you want to be:
  2. Why aren’t you there?
  3. Excusing external influences, what can YOU do to further your development in this area?
  4. Why haven’t you done this thing?
  5. What’s the worst that can happen if you step out and work to move forward in this area in your life?
  6. If that happens, what will you do?
  7. What happens if you don’t even try to step out?
  8. Are you exchanging short term comfort for long term pain?
  9. What lessons can be extracted from the pain of failure?
  10. Now what are you going to do to improve this area in your life?!

To aid you in answering #10, I’d highly suggest reading “The 4-Hour Workweek” by Timothy Ferris.  This book has been an incredible add to my thought process and life and will certainly give some additional insights into the questions above.

Hopefully we’ve given you something to “think about!”  icon smile A Little Heart Exercise...

No Regrets

No Regrets

Why run the race, just to come in 2nd place?! ~ Adam Jackson

Why are you here?!

Did you come to win or did you come to quit?

Did you come to get punked or did you come to dominate?

What’s your purpose in life?  Why did the creator (whatever you believe) decide to allow you to occupy this place in space and time?  And what are you doing with it?

Do you have control over your life or do you let other people, places or things dictate your day to day outcome?

Did you know that one of the top 5 regrets that people have right before they die is not living the life that they wanted to live?  They regret not looking that certain someone in the face and telling them just where they could go!  They regret not taking that risk in that venture which could have produced a radical amount of success or equal amount of pain!  They regret allowing the thought of failing at a “responsibility” dictate their life so much so that they were afraid to LIVE while they were ALIVE!!

You know these people….they’re usually the cantankerous person sitting around fussing at everyone for not being “this way” or “that way.”  What they’re really trying to do is force everyone else into the box that they made for themselves.  You can’t live your life a certain way because that’s not how they chose to live their lives.

In life, we go through many stages of development if we’re purposeful and cognizant about it.

Many years ago, I made the decision, once I realized that it really was my choice, to be the best!  PERIOD!! ……Anything less is just as foreign to me as Mandarin Chinese.

Being the best and living on purpose means you have to take risks!!  Some big and some small…but own it!  Own your choices and your ability to make them.

I remember when I first made the full on dive into entrepreneurship….I’m sure I was a funny site to my more experienced, but less formally educated, counter parts.  I remember thinking that my degrees and corporate experience should make the transition rather smooth.  NOT!!!!!!!!!  LOLOL!

In fact, that made it harder….I like to joke that changing my mind and how it worked was the literal equivalent of the reversal process of the rudders on the Titanic!!  They had been going in the same direction for so long and with such speed that when I was approaching my personal iceberg, I couldn’t switch gears fast enough to prevent my “boat” from crashing!!

YES…I’ve missed some things along the way!  Without a doubt….I have and still am risking, and sometimes going without, some of my creature comforts.  My children now understand what the word “budget” means! LOL!!

BUT….I bet you that when I’m on my death bed, I will not be one of those people looking back over my life thinking about what could have been.

Get courageous!  Take control!  Make a decision to own your life without the pain of regret!!  After all, no one is going to live or die in your place.

As I sit here it is dawning on me more and more how the seasons are shifting.

As we move along this journey in our lives, we will have various seasons.  There will be a time to plant, a time to cultivate and then a time to harvest.  Often times, seeding and cultivation are long and seemingly narrow periods.  Almost like walking down a hall that long and seems dark and sometimes lonely.

You have this incredible idea….you sow the seed!

You work to bring the idea to pass thru various activities.  You might invest in materials needed to advance the growth of your business…You might actually move to product creation…You will network and connect with other people and build relationships that will allow you to further your vision.  You will have the opportunity of new contracts and the disappointment when many of them fall thru.  But you will keep going….you are cultivating the seed!

Finally, based on your efforts your seeds and cultivation of that seed will have produced a crop.  Harvesting is all about the timing of when to pluck that crop (production) from the ground.  And notice, that you are still working in the harvest.  Your work comes in the pulling of the fruit from the ground! ….you have harvested the results of your earlier efforts!

However, the harvest has to be gathered! The seeds have been planted and properly cultivated into ripe produce…however, unless you go out into the field and pick them up, in the ground is where they will remain.  You now have to go TAKE IT!!

If we miss our season of harvest, we will not be able to enjoy the fruits of our earlier labor.  Soon…it will be time to sow the seeds again and repeat the process.  Have you ever wondered…”when will my sowing season be over?”

I would submit that maybe you missed the time to go and gather your Harvest.  There is another Harvest season here…please don’t skip enjoying the fruit simply because you don’t realize that you have to go pick up the produce to enjoy.

It’s #TIME.TO.TAKE.IT!!! ~ nK

Bare It All

Posted by on Oct 1, 2012 in Being Yourself | 0 comments

Bare It All

Realness is a quality that is needed in much higher supply…more now than ever.

Being real with ourselves first and foremost….but then being real with others.  However, if you are not willing to be real with yourself about who you are, what you are doing and what you are NOT doing, you will find yourself running in the same circles.

It is the literal equivalent to driving around the same block 10 times a day and hitting the EXACT same pothole each time.  You cannot anticipate the pothole because you’ve purposely put blinders on.

I submit to you that there is freedom is nakedness with yourself.  There is freedom in telling yourself off… go ahead, look in the mirror and tell yourself off.  Act as if you are somebody who really pissed you off and you could say just what you were thinking to this person…because, in reality, that’s what’s happening.

Say it!!  Be honest!!  In fact, be brutally honest with yourself about who you are, who you are not and who you want to be.  If who you are and who you want to be are too far apart, and you’ve got some really harsh things to say to yourself, then you need to address some things….WITH ACTION!

And I’ll tell you what, once you’ve done it, let it go….get it out, shake it off and shine!! There is NO CONDEMNATION that should come from you to yourself after that conversation.  NONE!!  As long as you’re committed to addressing the issue that is.  It’s harder on you to break a promise to yourself than it is to break one to someone else.

I know from experience, that chances are that you had so much condemnation for yourself before that mirror talk, that it was probably your poor and condemning self-talk that stagnated you in the first place.

Yell, scream, cuss, cry….do whatever you have to do to free yourself from the less than your best you!!  And then, FIX IT!!

BUT….this healing process can only begin when you agree to be naked.  Be naked with yourself….free yourself from Other People’s Opinions so that you can be naked with them too….and then, with purpose in your heart, move forward and build.  Do the actions that are in line with the person that you were created to be!!
